In planning my 3+ month international trip, I decided I wanted a new phone for a number of reasons:
- My Iphone 7 was turning into an annoying and slow piece of shit
- I wanted the most up-to-date phone camera because I didn’t want to bring a separate camera with me
- I want something reliable while traveling and didn’t want a software update to potentially cripple my older phone
I know there are a million Android phones to choose from. But for the sake of my decision making, I only cared about phones that are officially approved for Google’s Project Fi. Project Fi has so many great reviews from people traveling, and the added bonus of not having to figure out a new sim card for all of my locations. So the newest Pixel 3 is the only Android phone I’m considering.
The newest Iphone XS look great, BUT that $1000 price tag is killing me!! After reading reviews, watching youtube comparison videos, the XR seems like a great choice. The only small drawback is the lack of the telephoto lens. But honestly, it still takes damn good pictures without it. And let’s be real...how much do I really use the zoom feature? (Surprise! Not that much.)
I watched a bunch of comparison videos, read a ton of reviews, but none of those made the pluses/minuses of both phones easier to quantify. So I made my own list. It’s extremely scientific and precise (bitch please, no it’s not). Maybe it will help one or a few travelers consider what’s most important to them in a new phone. I explain my thought process below.
The “How important” column has a high score of 10 and ranks each choice by how important that feature/bug/annoyance is to me. I then rated rated each each phone based on that number. The row containing weight (lighter vs heavier) has a total high score of 3. When I really considered the 2 phones, neither of them is exactly what I want. So neither gets a 3. The total possible score is 53. Neither phone got a perfect score and the Pixel 3 wins almost entirely because of the unlimited cloud photo storage.
If Google fixes the audio issue, the Pixel 3 will have a much bigger advantage for me. For now, I’m going to keep adding to my highly scientific list as the phone receive new updates. My final decision will have to be made before I leave for my trip in December. Anyone else trying to pick between these 2 phones?
